アメリカのマヨネーズって瓶売りなんですよね。

みなさん、季節の匂いって感じます?
ここ最近あんまりお天気は良くなかったですが、
天気が崩れ始める前日(12日の水曜か13日の木曜だったかな?)に
外を出た時に「あ、これ春くるわ」と季節の変わり目を
匂いで感じ取りました。
春はいろんな思い出がブワッと蘇るので、嬉しいような悲しいような
なんとも言えない、鼻の奥がツンとする感覚に襲われます。
多分花粉ではないと思います。
先日、岡本先生のブログを読んでいてとても共感するところがありまして。
というのも、僕自身も英語科の端くれとして、
受験生の長文を一緒に読むことがままあり。
政治、自然科学、心理、社会学、哲学、経済学、医学…。
いろんなトピックに触れることができ、
その人の主張や裏付け、日本を超えて世界での知見を
問題を通して見ることができるので、
読んでいると勝手に「へぇ〜」「なるほどね〜」「いやでもこれは…」と
独り言を言っているのも珍しくありません。
その中でも特に、1番印象に残っている問題文は
「The Mayonnaise Jar and Two Cups of Coffee」という題の文です。
「あ〜知ってる〜」「読んだことある〜」という人も
もしかしたらいるかもしれません。
訳出を反転させておくので、

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar...and the coffee.
人生において,やるべきことが多すぎて手に負えなく思えたり、１日が24時間では足りないと思ったときは，マヨネーズの瓶とコーヒーを思い出してください。
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
教授は哲学の授業の前に，立ち上がって,自分の前に何かを並べました。授業が始まり，彼は黙って,とても大きな空のマヨネーズ瓶を手に取り，そしてゴルフボールでいっぱいにしていきました。そして,彼は学生にその瓶がいっぱいかどうか尋ねました。学生はいっぱいだと答えました。
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
すると教授は,小石が入った箱を持ち上げ,それらを瓶の中に注ぎました。そして軽く瓶を振ったのです。小石はゴルフボールの隙間に転がっていきました。その後,再び教授は学生に,瓶がいっぱいかどうか尋ねました。学生はいっぱいだと答えました。
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes."
次に教授は,砂が入った箱を取り出し,同様に瓶の中に注ぎました。もちろん,砂は隙間に入って瓶を満たしました。彼はもう一度，瓶がいっぱいかどうか尋ねました。学生はみな答えました。「はい」と。
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
教授は次にテーブルの下からコーヒーを2杯取り出すと，そのコーヒーの中身を全て,瓶の中に注ぎました。コーヒーは砂の間の隙間をうまく全部埋めました。学生はそれを見て笑いました。
"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things. your God, family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions: things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else: the small stuff.
「さて」学生の笑いが静まり,教授は言いました。「君たちにはこの瓶が,君たちの人生を表していると思ってほしい。ゴルフボールは大切なもの。神様，家族，子ども，健康，友だち，そして特に好きなこと。もし他のもの全てがなくなり，これしか残っていないとしても,それさえあれば人生が満たされるというものだ。 小石は,仕事や家や車といった,その他に重要なもの。砂は他のもの全部，些細なことだ。」
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
「もし瓶に砂を最初に入れたら」彼は続けます。「小石やゴルフボールが入る隙間はない。人生も同じだ。君の時間とエネルギーを全て些細なことに使ってしまえば，大切なもののための隙間はなくなってし まう。自分の幸せに最も重要なものに,注意を払いなさい。子どもと遊びなさい。健康診断を受けなさい。妻や夫と夕食に出かけなさい。18歳に戻ったみたいに過ごしてみなさい。家を掃除や，片づける時間はいつだってあるだろう。」
Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
「ゴルフボールを第一にしなさい。それは本当に大切なものだ。優先順位をつけなさい。残りはただの砂だ。」
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.
生徒の一人が手を挙げて，コーヒーは何を表しているのか尋ねました。
The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."
教授はにっこりと笑い,「よくぞ聞いてくれたね。それは,君の人生がどれだけ一杯になったように思えても，友だちとコーヒーを飲むくらいの隙間はあるということさ。」といった。
いかがだったでしょうか。
どこかの試験か、僕の通ってた高校の試験だったか定かではないのですが、
出来過ぎているかもしれませんが、
読みながら「あ〜めっちゃいいな〜」と
数年経っても覚えている長文の1つです。
きっと楽しむなんていうそんな余裕はないかもしれませんが、
受験や授業というものを通して、
みんなの世界が広がるといいなと思っています。
